THE ORIGINAL TOWN OF NORTH PLATTE INCLUDES THE INITIAL PLAT OF THE CITY, MAKING IT A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF OUR COMMUNITY’S HISTORY. The Original Town area connects today’s Downtown to the North Platte River and such significant park and open space resources as Cody Park and the Dowhower Softball Complex. It also includes residential neighborhoods that provide affordable housing to residents, as well as such major institutions as the Berean Church, the Lincoln County Historical Museum and Buffalo Bill’s Scout’s Rest Ranch.

Over time, the neighborhood’s commercial and residential environments have stagnated and the area has not taken full advantage of its strategic location and surrounding resources. In response, the Original Town Association, a neighborhood-based effort, has organized to promote revitalization of this important district. In support of this effort, the City of North Platte initiated a planning process to develop this vision into a strategic plan to guide future development in the neighborhood.
The resultant Neighborhood Redevelopment Plan was adopted by the City of North Platte as it recognized that the community must act to encourage development, attract new residents and maintain and improve Original Town’s commercial and residential environments. It is based on the principle that the health of the residential and commercial sectors of the neighborhood are dependent on each other. Its recommendations focus on development concepts designed to create more attractive residential and commercial environments for current and prospective residents and businesses. |
